Compliance officers are more involved than ever in the quality-of-care crisis in America's hospitals. Their job now is to identify and address the risks that your organization faces and take care of your most important stakeholders-the patients-by ensuring that they receive the best possible care.

Many compliance officers already address quality-of-care issues. Top compliance officers use the following strategies to safeguard quality of care:

  1. Assign staff overlapping responsibilities in compliance and quality of care. For example, many members of the compliance committee at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia also serve on the quality committee. Members of both committees focus on quality-of-care issues as part of their monitoring system.
  2. Involve physicians. Find several well-respected physicians who will work with compliance officers to involve other physicians in improving quality of care. Involve your CEO and board in this process.
  3. Make sure that your rules actually work. Consider appointing a compliance liaison in each department to make sure that your organization's hierarchy includes the rank-and-file healthcare leaders. When making decisions, integrate these leaders into the process.
