Nine unhappy patients took the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) up on its offer to give refunds for a less-than-stellar hospital experience, collecting a total of $450 in May. DMC's heavily promoted money-back guarantee is the latest play for patients in Metro Detroit's increasingly cutthroat healthcare industry.

The DMC money-back deal promises to refund dissatisfied patients out-of-pocket costs up to $100. Patients get the money back by submitting a form to the hospital. The refund amounts vary depending on the problem. A bad experience with a staff member, for example, costs DMC $100. A complaint about the physical condition of a room warrants $25.
