Case studies are an effective means of validating competency. In this approach, individuals can describe how they would provide care for a particular patient or how they would deal with a particular scenario presented to them. These can also be used to address age-specific competencies. After someone describes how he or she would take care of a 37-year-old diabetic patient, the assessor could ask that person what he or she would do differently if the patient was 65 years old. Their description of the factors they would consider and how they would alter their care could be used to document their ability to care for patients of different ages.
