Kinston, NC-based Lenoir Memorial Hospital's (LMH) Striving Toward Excellence in Practice (STEP) program got off the ground in October and has captured the interest of the hospital's nurses. The program is a clinical ladder model for bedside nurses that rewards staff with pay increases for each level completed. The program includes four levels of nursing and LMH requires that all nurses achieve at least a Level 2 status.

To climb the ladder, nurses are required to obtain specific certifications and must complete a patient-care project.

The hospital currently has eleven Level 3 nurses, and most of those are working on becoming Level 4. The requirements of being a Level 4 nurse include holding a BSN and to have been a Level 3 for at least two years.
