Middletown Regional Hospital in Ohio will be the first healthcare facility in the nation to undergo a "cultural competence" review, which will gauge how well the institution meets the needs of its diverse population. Multicultural populations in Southwest Ohio are not as large as other areas in the U.S., but they are growing five to six times faster than the national average.

The three-day survey will be conducted by The Center of Multicultural Competency in Healthcare Organizations (CMCHO), an organization that compares hospitals' performance in diversity issues to standards developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The data will then be analyzed and compiled, with a written report going to the hospital by the end of June.
