Four new courses have been launched at the North Essex Community College in Lawrence, MA, to train registered nurses (RNs) for work on intensive care units (ICUs) and emergency room departments (EDs). The 14-credit program began this year after the Merrimack Valley Workforce Investment Board identified critical-care nurses as a hiring priority in the Merrimack Valley, a region of 15 communities in northeastern Massachusetts.

The program is open to RNs with one or more years of experience and trains students using mannequins and real equipment to mimic what really goes on in ICUs and EDs. Classes are offered at night and on the weekends to accommodate students' work schedules.
