A new medical reserve group has taken root in Southwest Colorado, in hopes of helping the region become better prepared to handle a large-scale disaster, such as the bird flu.

The group is being headed by two coordinators-Susanne Epson, health and safety director of the Southwest Colorado chapter of the Red Cross, and Joann Wade, a chapter volunteer-who envision recruiting and training a 20-person volunteer reserve unit. In April, the pair attended a leadership and training conference that trained Medical Reserve Corps units from across the county.

There are currently more than 400 Medical Reserve corps units throughout the U.S., all of which are part of the Medical Reserve Corps program, created under the Homeland Security Department after September 11.
