According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, certified nursing assistants account for 10% of the 13.5 million U.S. healthcare workers. With the rapidly increasing population of elderly people, however, experts are urging that the number of people in these direct care jobs expand even further.

In California, where it is estimated the number of elderly people will increase 112% in the next 10 years, a nonprofit program is turning out more than 100 nursing assistants and home health aides per year. Located in San Diego, the Golden Hill Health Careers Academy is a 10-year-old program that has produced 666 certified nursing assistant graduates. The program focuses on helping poor and underserved people move into the healthcare arena-in total, 85% of the students were considered economically disadvantaged and 30% were on welfare when they started.
