According to a recent survey conducted by the American Federation of Teachers Healthcare, a healthcare union, 56% of nurses and 64% of X-ray technicians have suffered lifting-related injuries, chronic pain, or both. What's more, nearly half the nurses and nearly one-third of the X-ray technicians surveyed said they were considering leaving patient care because of injuries or chronic pain.

A new training program developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in partnership with the American Nurses Association has attempted to provide a temporary solution to the problem. The program, the Safe Patient Movement and Handling program (SPH&M), is intended to reduce the number of injuries to both staff and patients. The program is currently in place at 26 nursing schools throughout the country.
