In an effort to increase the number of qualified people entering the healthcare industry, a new high school opening this fall in Raleigh, NC, will allow students to earn both their high school diplomas and an associate degree in just five years.

The school, named the Wake Early College of Health and Sciences, will focus its course content on health and sciences and will offer job shadowing and internship experiences through the WakeMed Health & Hospitals system, also located in Raleigh. There will be no charge for students to attend the school, as it is part of the Wake County Public School System.

Early college high schools are a part of the state's efforts to redesign North Carolina's high schools in an effort to increase graduation rates and provide opportunities for students to develop the knowledge and skills they need to join the workforce.
