According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, the ratio of registered nurses to people in El Paso, TX, in 2005 was 477.3 to 100,000-a far cry from the national average of 825 to 100,000.

In response to the severe shortage, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) launched the Accelerated Fast Track Bachelor of Science in Nursing program last fall. The 15-month intensive course of study enrolled nine students in its first class and university officials expect the program to enroll about 20 in the next class, which will begin in May.
