A recent article in the Christian Science Monitor reported that the number of foreign-born nurses working in the United States more than tripled from 4,000 in 1998 to 15,000 in 2004. That number represents around 10% of all practicing nurses in the United States.

In addition, the article described how many physicians from the Philippines are returning to school to seek nursing education, after which they can emigrate to the United States to seek lucrative work in a labor-short market.
