Wireless and mobile devices such as laptops, personal digital assistants, and tablet personal computers may be convenient and increase efficiency, but they also have the potential to pose security risks. To prevent information from reaching the wrong hands, facilities should make sure that users are required to enter a password before they can turn the machine on and should also require that users log-in to access the operating system.

Users can also play a part in securing the data stored on these devices. Establish and document policies that address the use of mobile devices and the users' responsibilities, including:

  • approved uses
  • types of information that can be stored
  • software programs users can install
  • proper storage for devices and associated modules
