Three years ago, a program funded by a $1.1 million federal grant was started in Arizona to boost the number of bilingual nurses. Since its inception, the program has enrolled about 135 English-Spanish speakers.

The program, which is a collaborative effort between South Mountain Community College (SMCC), GateWay Community College, and Banner Health, all located in Phoenix, allows students to complete their general education coursework at SMCC and then transfer into GateWay's nursing program to complete their certificates or associate's degrees. They also receive hands-on training at Banner's two clinics.

Banner covers students' tuition, books and fees, in exchange for job commitments. Job obligations can range from one-year to three-year stints, depending on the program track: certified nursing assistant, licensed practical nurse, or registered nurse.
