Workforce diversity and your written documentation
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 28, 2006
It has long been recognized in the nursing profession that the nursing population does not mirror the demographics of the United States, according to Anne Jadwin, RN, MSN, AOCN, CNA, director of nursing at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. "Minority groups are severely underrepresented in the RN workforce," she says. As you prepare your written documentation for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® status, think about the ways in which your organization targets recruitment of a more diverse group of employees, suggests Jadwin. Consider implementing an initiative such as a diversity recruitment advisory council to evaluate recruitment practices, review best practices in literature, and, if necessary, develop strategies to attract a more diverse workforce, she adds.
