Once you get staff to understand the importance of critical thinking, what can you do to get them started? Amanda Swanson, BS, RN, clinical development coordinator of organizational development at DuBois (PA) Regional Medical Center (DRMC), suggests prompting staff to do the following:
- Think out loud
- Continue asking the question "why?"
- Compare similar situations
- Share experiences and stories with colleagues
Keep in mind the following obstacles to critical thinking, and be realistic about where you are in each category:
- Reliance on authority
- Rigid thinking
- Cultural conditioning
To learn three more obstacles to critical thinking and more helpful advice to get staff thinking critically, go to The Staff Educator (TSE). Subscribers to the online version of TSE have free access to this article. Subscribers to the print newsletter can find this article in their February issue.
