Once you get staff to understand the importance of critical thinking, what can you do to get them started? Amanda Swanson, BS, RN, clinical development coordinator of organizational development at DuBois (PA) Regional Medical Center (DRMC), suggests prompting staff to do the following:

  • Think out loud
  • Continue asking the question "why?"
  • Compare similar situations
  • Share experiences and stories with colleagues

  • Reliance on authority
  • Rigid thinking
  • Cultural conditioning
