The U.S. Public Health Services' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has determined that more than 63% of Florida's population consists of particularly vulnerable persons-people with mental and physical disabilities, children, elderly, pregnant women, the homeless, and visitors or part-time residents. With such a large number of vulnerable people, healthcare workers may face a special challenge in the event of acts of terrorism or natural disasters

To prepare the local healthcare workforce to react efficiently and skillfully in the event of an emergency, HRSA has awarded a three-year, $4.2 million grant to the state.

In the first year, the grant will help increase awareness levels for approximately 7,800 healthcare workers, staff, and volunteers. Coursework will include Web-based components and will be offered in both English and Spanish. The curriculum will include exercises with personnel trained to simulate casualty victims and events.
