Weekly Q&A: Demonstrate cultural competence

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 14, 2006

This week,a reader asks how to demonstrate cultural competence in the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® application. Read the response below from our advisor, Anne Jadwin, RN, MSN, AOCN, CNA, director of nursing at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

Q: How do you demonstrate cultural competence in the Magnet Recognition Program® application?

A: To meet the requirements of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, most hospitals employ various strategies to ensure the care they deliver is culturally sensitive. For designation, extend your focus from a patient/visitor perspective to also include a staff/employee perspective on how you demonstrate cultural competence. Begin your assessment by analyzing the demographics of your patient population and the staff you employ. Define the most common ethnic and cultural groups within your service catchment area. Then seek unique examples of diversity and cultural competence by thinking of the patient and staff stories that best portray excellence in these areas. For example, make sure your nursing assessment and admission history forms incorporate questions related to cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual differences.
