HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 14, 2006

Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, CO achieved ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation in June 2004. According to Candace Pruett, RN, BSN, human resources consultant for nursing at the hospital, designation has helped the organization recruit and retain nurses. "About 48.9% [of interviewees] tell us that they come here because of our status," says Pruett. This allows Poudre Valley to put less focus on aggressive hiring tactics (e.g., offering large sign-on bonuses) and instead focus on retention efforts for the existing staff. Pruett says the hospital receives a substantial proportion of recruits through word-of-mouth advertising and an employee referral program. Pruett believes nurses at Poudre Valley are committed to the organization. "Our RN turnover rate for 2004 was 8.4%," says Pruett. "That's a good indicator. Our goal is to get it even lower."
