Weekly Q&A: Selecting unit-based champions

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 7, 2006

This week,a reader asks for guidelines to choose unit-based ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) champions. Read the response below from our advisor, Dorothy A. Garman, RN, MSN, MRP coordinator and coordinator of professional development and patient education at Newport (RI) Hospital.

Q: I am looking for guidelines to select unit-based champions for our journey. Do you have any suggestions?

A: There is no right or wrong approach to the selection of champions. Often, a mental snapshot of the nursing staff provides evidence that potential champions abound on every nursing unit. The champion is one who acts as a "cheerleader" to promote and raise the collective awareness of the program to peers and other staff. He or she has the ability to help nonnursing staff members recognize the importance of everyone's contributions to the journey. A champion

  • is creative, energetic, and enthusiastic about designation
  • serves as a role model
  • is willing to take the time to educate, elicit feedback from, and provide regular updates to unit staff members about the journey
