How well do you know the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)? Read the following scenario to stay on your toes.
Scenario: A patient is treated at a hospital, and two nurses need to discuss the patient's treatment.
True or false: To safeguard the patient's privacy, the hospital must provide a room with soundproof walls in which the nurses can talk.
False. The privacy regulations don't require healthcare organizations to provide private rooms or soundproof walls in which staff can discuss patients' protected health information (PHI). A reasonable effort must be made, however, to prevent being overheard.
Editor's note: The above excerpt is from the online course, "HIPAA Series: Privacy & Security for the Nursing/Clinical Staff." For more information on this and other courses in our library, go to www.hcprofessor.com.
