The AARP has launched an initiative to help members of the workforce 50 years or older move into the healthcare profession. The Workforce Initiative seeks to educate employers about the benefits of hiring older workers and teaches companies how they can practice age-neutral policies, so that no one age group is more or less favored.
The AARP reports that workers from the baby boom generation, those born between 1946 and 1964, often have a strong work ethic and are loyal employees, two traits that are attractive to many employers. Typically, they value flexible work schedules and health insurance coverage over a higher salary.
The AARP initiative also includes a featured employers program to help connect companies interested in hiring mature workers with people age 50 years and older who are looking for a job. Two healthcare employers currently participate in the program.
