Professional nursing practice committees

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 31, 2006

To promote a professional nursing environment at Poudre Valley Hospital, an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated hospital in Fort Collins, CO, nurses are involved in several committees that give them a direct say in how the hospital is run. Nurses chair and serve on committees that discuss issues such as hospital policies and procedures, how to reward employees, using clinical evidence to change practice, and patient education. These nursing committees include

  • nursing quality
  • evidence-based practice
  • patient care coordinators/clinical coordinators
  • clinical education
  • procedure and protocol
  • recruitment and retention

The committees "recognize the professional practice of the nurse," says Donna Podusk, RN, MS, CNNA, director of resource services. "So if there are any issues or concerns, staff know who their representatives are and that they can get the issue on the agenda of those committees."
