Change-of-shift report

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 24, 2006

When it comes to shift reporting at healthcare organizations, the process can look different from facility to facility. According to Barbara Hannon, RN, MSN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the process also varies from unit to unit within her institution. "Our units are totally decentralized, and it is a unit-based decision on how shift report is done," she says. "With approximately 50 inpatient units, you will find 50 [different] forms of report at our hospital." For facilities pursuing designation, Hannon stresses the importance of individualizing shift-to-shift report at the unit level to stay consistent with a designated culture that supports decentralized decision-making. "Designated hospitals are decentralized with nurses at the unit level making shared governance decisions on what works best for them, their unit, and their patient population," Hannon adds.
