Nurses at the Genesis Medical Center in Dewitt, IA, are taking seriously the notion that with age comes wisdom-and making it a part of their nurse training program. The hospital recently received a $49,623 grant from the Iowa Department of Public Health to expand a certified nurse assistant, or CNA, education program that draws on the experience of nurses toward the end of their careers to help train a new generation of nurses.
The training program uses experienced nurses who no longer work full time as teachers and mentors. The hospital has been collaborating with Eastern Iowa Community College District to provide CNA training for 60 students a year. This year's grant will allow it to serve 120 students.
