The University of California (UC) at Davis Health System received the Outstanding Community Service Award for 2005 from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) for its effort to reach out to communities whose needs are not met by the standard healthcare system. UC Davis and the Medical College of Wisconsin both received the award, beating out more than 100 other AAMC members.

The UC Davis Health System runs several programs that reach out to the community, including the Shifa Clinic-a free, student-run community health clinic that operates in the inner city of Sacramento and has a largely Middle Eastern patient population.

Another program is the Communities and Physicians Together program, which works with the community to address the issue of child health. So far, the program has brought UC Davis pediatricians and physicians-in-training to five underprivileged neighborhoods in the Sacramento area.
