Lutheran Hospital earns designation after two year journey
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 17, 2006
Lutheran Hospital recently achieved ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation, making it the first designated hospital in northeast Indiana and the sixth in the state. After a two-year process, including submitting written documentation that was 15 inches thick and undergoing a site visit in October 2005, the organization earned the status earlier this month. The project leader notes that one of the most satisfying parts of the honor is that the hospital didn't have to fundamentally change to earn the designation. Lutheran Hospital employs approximately 900 nurses and has a 4% nurse vacancy rate, compared to the 12.5% national average. A nursing official says that self-scheduling opportunities and representation in unit-based leadership positions contribute to the low vacancy rate and the organization's overall culture of excellence.
