A strategy for success
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 3, 2006
The professional team at Forsyth Medical Center, which led various ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-preparation activities on their hospital's journey, conducted a series of workshops to help units gear up for designation. Every nursing unit had a representative who attended the workshops and then communicated the information to staff on their units. Topics focused on the 14 Forces of Magnetism and professionalism. Attendees participated in group activities at some of the workshops, including an exercise in which they were given a mirror and asked, "If you held a mirror up [in front of your unit], what things would you have to work on to make it excellent?" The team usually held workshops about once every four to six months while preparing for designation. The professional team consists of staff nurse co-chairs, a nurse representative from each of the divisions (e.g., medical/surgical, mother/baby, critical care, and cardiac), a nurse manager, an assistant nurse manager, and a staff development clinician. The organization's project director facilitates the team.
