Eight lessons learned: The Fox Chase perspective
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, January 3, 2006
Although healthcare organizations approach the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® journey using a myriad of unique, individualized methods, those that have already achieved the designation can be a valuable source of insight for those pursuing designation. Below, Anne Jadwin, RN, MSN, AOCN, CNA, director of nursing at Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC) in Philadelphia shares eight lessons learned at her institution:
- Establish subcommittees for each Force from the onset-this enhances focus and timeline deadlines
- Establish a stringent timeline for application completion-it is easy to get sidetracked by other priorities
- Consider "less may be more" when gathering interpretive evidence
- Plan for the application writing to take much longer than originally expected
- Organize materials by Forces
- Use a spreadsheet to document best practice examples for cross-reference
- Involve staff at every opportunity
- Provide progress updates at all meetings
Editor's note: FCCC earned Magnet status in August 2000.
