Getting support: Show nonnursing staff how designation affects them
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 20, 2005
To get buy-in from nonnursing groups, "you must tie the group into the overall goal by letting them see how ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation will help them," explains Barbara Hannon, MSN, RN, MRP coordinator, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. For example, Hannon made a PowerPoint presentation on nurse-physician collegiality, built around the acute nursing shortage, which affects physicians at the hospital, she says. Hannon emphasized how important it was to retain each and every nurse at the hospital and how physicians could help create a more collegial environment to contribute to better nurse retention. She presented this PowerPoint to every clinical faculty group at the organization: "It was well-received, and most faculty groups expressed a desire to make the environment more nurse-physician friendly," says Hannon.
