Back to school: Appraisers examine RN education

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 20, 2005

As part of the organizational profile, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) applicants are required to report the educational preparation of RNs at the unit level. Facilities are not required to have a certain percentage of BSN-prepared nurses, but appraisers do want to see opportunities available for staff to further their education. "Appraisers want to get a picture of your nursing department, and education is a big part of that," says Dorothy Garman, RN, MSN, MRP coordinator and coordinator of nursing professional development and patient education at Newport (RI) Hospital, a designated facility since 2004. "They were thrilled that we had a collaborative relationship with Salve Regina University and that we were getting our RNs back into school."
