Celebrating nursing: An evening of Magnetism

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 13, 2005

In September 2005, nurse leaders at Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta (SJHA) coordinated an inaugural nursing gala called "An Evening of Magnetism" to recognize and enhance the culture of excellence at their organization, says Polly Willis, MSN, RN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator at SJHA. The event's goals were to celebrate nursing at SJHA and raise money for its expansion project, the Kenneth E. Thomas Center for Nursing Excellence. Nurses and physicians purchased seats for $100 each to attend the gala, which included a keynote address from Dr. Linda Aiken, presentations from families about the compassionate care that nursing staff provided during loved ones' illnesses, and testimonials about nursing excellence from members of the medical staff. Nurses were honored for receiving scholarships and awards for nursing excellence. Organizers also featured 2005 as SJHA's 125th anniversary, the 25th anniversary of their shared governance, and the 10th anniversary of their initial designation. According to Willis, the nurses who attended the Gala became-if they weren't already-vocal designation advocates.
