Gauging staff-nurse readiness
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 13, 2005
The decision to pursue ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) status takes careful thought and planning, as it is a long and expensive process. Staff-nurse feedback and support in this pre-planning phase of the journey is critical to executing MRP status as a strategic initiative. Anne Jadwin, RN, MSN, AOCN, CNA, director of nursing at designated Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, offers the following four tips for leaders currently considering the journey:
- Survey your nursing staff and analyze the results at the unit level (e.g., nursing work index tool, work satisfaction)
- Address any areas of dissatisfaction (decision-making, nurse-physician relationships, autonomy, etc.)
- Gain organizational support for the MRP process
- Present hospital research and staff satisfaction data to key stakeholders
