Weekly Q&A: Five strategies to connect with staff
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 6, 2005
This week, a reader asks about strategies for senior leaders to connect with staff. Read the response below from our advisor, Elise Gropper, PhD, APRN, CPHQ, CNAA,BC, president of Gropper & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm in Coral Springs, FL.
Q: What are examples of innovative ways senior leaders connect/converse with staff?
A: In my opinion, the most effective way to continuously connect with staff is to regularly schedule management rounds-a strategy discussed decades ago in Blanchard's and Johnson's book, the One-Minute Manager. Rounding regularly throughout the organization gives leaders and staff the opportunity to converse about real-time issues, achievements, and suggestions for organizational improvement. The leaders of many successful organizations also find fun and exciting ways to connect with staff through
- running monthly "town hall meetings" to provide staff with the latest information about the organization's ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® status as well as elicit their feedback about the process
- planning monthly birthday celebrations for individuals and groups of staff
- organizing an "adopt-a-unit," event in which senior leaders "adopt" a unit or department and become part of their meetings, recognition ceremonies, and honor their successes
- sponsoring cultural diversity celebrations that recognize customs and foods of a particular culture
