Document a culture without alienating nonnursing departments

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 29, 2005

One way to demonstrate an organization-wide culture of "Magnetism" is to involve nonnursing departments in the quest for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation. Highlight this interdisciplinary collaboration within the body of the written documentation to demonstrate nursing's high regard for multidisciplinary efforts. For instance, throughout the initial designation and redesignation efforts at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, the nursing department identified best practices that reflected the contributions of other departments to the MRP culture for inclusion in the written documentation, says Anne Jadwin, RN, MSN, AOCN, CNA, director of nursing at the hospital. Examples of these practices include

  • professional development, cultural diversity, competitive wages and benefits, and a positive work environment evident through personnel policies and procedures
  • multidisciplinary performance improvement teams that address operational and quality concerns
