Weekly Q&A: Care delivery models

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 15, 2005

This week, a reader asks about evidence to demonstrate nurse involvement in care delivery models. Read the response below from our advisor, Anne Jadwin, RN, MSN, AOCN, CNA, director of nursing at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

Q: What type of evidence should I consider when demonstrating in the written documents how staff RNs are involved in developing, implementing, and evaluating care delivery models?

A: Think about including departmental meeting minutes in which some aspect of the care-delivery model was discussed (e.g., caregiver roles, skill mix, nurse-patient ratios). Explain the opportunities staff nurses have to help determine the number and type of staff that is appropriate for their specific area of practice. Provide evidence that staff nurses review job descriptions and competency checklists, and revise them based on evolving roles in their care-delivery model. Cite examples of how professional literature support was used to justify changes in the care delivery model. Describe how staff nurses are involved in monitoring their own practice, using performance criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of care. Include examples of monitoring criteria or the tools used to collect this data, and meeting minutes that reflect the discussion of these evaluation findings.
