Weekly Q&A: Touring a designated facility

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, November 8, 2005

This week, a reader asks about touring an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) status organization. Read the response below from our advisor, Dorothy A. Garman, RN, MSN, MRP coordinator and coordinator of professional development and patient education at Newport (RI) Hospital.

Q: We are in the beginning stages of our journey and I am interested in touring a designated facility. How do I go about doing so and would it be more advantageous to go now, rather than later in the process?

A: This is a great idea. Visiting an organization that has been through the process is exciting and motivating, as people in designated organizations offer first-hand experiences from their journeys. At first, some aspects of the process may appear overwhelming, but an opportunity to see "real-time" evidence of the programs in an MRP institution is a great confidence builder. Contact your nearest designated facility, or one of similar size/setting, (there's a list of all MRP organizations on the ANCC's Web site). The MRP coordinator of that facility will most likely be able to help facilitate your request.

Deciding when to plan your visit will probably depend on what you're looking to find (e.g., how they structure shared governance or what their written documentation looks like), so I encourage you to make more than one visit, if possible. Tour other designated institutions during different phases of your journey, as you will have different questions as you progress through stages such as evidence collection and document writing.
