Knowledgeable, strong, risk-taking nurse leaders follow an articulated philosophy in the daily operations of the nursing department. Nursing leaders convey a strong sense of advocacy and support on behalf of the staff. These attributes should include:
- The chief nurse executive (CNE) reports directly to the chief executive officer (CEO) and this enables the CNE to advocate for staff nurses
- A philosophy of nursing that is grounded in a theoretical framework
- Staff nurse involvement in creating strategic nursing plan or nursing mission statement
- Participation in organization for all nurses at all levels
- Involvement in professional organizations for all nurses at all levels
- Publications for all nurses at all levels
- Good staffing ratios
- CNE facilitation of nursing research and evidence-based practice
- Staff nurse satisfaction data and involvement of staff nurses in the process
