The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has granted $1.2 million to St. Louis University to fund training programs for healthcare professionals involved in geriatric care.

The university's Gateway Geriatric Education Center (GEC) will use the grant to fund continuing medical education courses that design natural disaster drills for senior adults who live on their own and for those who live in nursing homes. The Gateway GEC hopes to increase awareness of the special needs of older patients in times of disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, the director of the center said.

The grant will also be used to provide specialized geriatric education to minority healthcare providers and to help them care for underserved patients, many of whom live in rural areas.
