The Department of Labor awarded $125 million to 70 community colleges across the country this October, as part of its Community-Based Job Training Grants.

The grants were first introduced in 2004 by President Bush and support workforce training for high growth industries, such as healthcare, through the nation's community and technical colleges. For example, the Community College of Rhode Island plans on using its grant of more than $1.8 million to recruit, train, and retain healthcare workers, with the money going to the college's Health Care Futures Program.

A large number of the grants were given to Gulf Coast and Southeast colleges, who received preference in the application process due to the damage suffered from Hurricane Katrina.
