Tennessee nurse anesthetists are playing a greater role in anesthesiology than ever before. State law allows Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) to practice independently, under the surgeon's license, and they are usually paid about a quarter of the salary made by an anesthesiologist.
Almost 1,500 rural Tennessee hospitals are served exclusively by CRNAs. Physician anesthesiologists practice mostly in large, urban hospitals, but even then much of the anesthesia is administered by CRNAs. Medicare allows an anesthesiologist to supervise up to four CRNAs at a time.
Applications to CRNA programs at Tennessee nursing schools are up and demand for qualified nurse anesthetists remains high.
