In 2003, nearly 2,000 qualified applicants were denied admission to associate degree and baccalaureate nursing programs in Maryland, primarily due to lack of faculty.
To address this issue, the University of Maryland School of Nursing has partnered with Shady Grove Adventist Hospital (SGAH) in a new initiative, Teach for the Health of It, to move a significant number of registered nurses into faculty positions within a two year period.
The Teach for the Health of It program is funded with the help of an $800,000 grant from the state's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. It aims to encourage 40 or more qualified registered nurses to move into faculty teaching positions and to aid nursing students to complete their degree.
