Report reveals medical education lacking

A survey by the American Medical Student Association has revealed that physicians-in-training are receiving traditional education, but are not being offered curricula that keeps pace with advances in the healthcare industry.

The survey showed that more than 35% of students are not required to study medical ethics, and 57.5% are not offered, or are unsure of their options, courses in bioterrorism or disaster preparedness.

Other highlights include:

  • More than 24% of respondents are not provided education on health disparities
  • Only 17% of respondents are very satisfied with their medical education
  • Respondents reported their curriculum included no classes/electives on: Business of medicine (47%), Technology advances in medicine (5%), Global HIV/AIDS (31%), and Complementary and alternative medicine (26%)
