Weekly Q&A: Privileging of APNs
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 18, 2005
This week, a reader asks about CNO involvement in the privileging of APNs. Read the response below from our advisor, Dorothy A. Garman, RN, MSN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator and coordinator of professional development and patient education at Newport (RI) Hospital.
Q: What involvement does the CNO need to have in the privileging of APNs?
A: In the organizational overview table of the ANCC's 2005 Application Manual, #10(d) states that applicants must submit "evidence that the CNO, or his or her designee, participates in the privileging process for advanced practice nurses." When we submitted our documents in 2004, we included evidence that our CNO attends credentialing committee meetings--in which members vote on the privileging of APNs. She also provides verbal input into all credentialing reviews, but she does not have voting privileges unless the vote is for an APN. I know that other organizations have a similar process in place. You may consider this approach at your organization, but also consider consulting an ANCC representative to be sure that the measures you take are in compliance with the expectations stated in the manual.
