Weekly Q&A: Teaching opportunities for RNs

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 11, 2005

This week, a reader asks for clarification regarding Force 11: Nurses as teachers. Read the response below from our advisor, Suzanne C. Beyea, RN, PhD, FAAN, director of nursing research, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), Lebanon, NH.

Q: What does the ANCC's 2005 Magnet Recognition Program® application manual mean in Force 11: Nurses as teachers, when it states, "describe all innovative, creative, academic practicum experiences that are in place in the organization?"

A: There are many programs organizations can share to demonstrate compliance with this Force. For instance, one might want to describe innovative approaches to providing clinical faculty or clinical experiences for schools of nursing. For example, DHMC has implemented a "faculty pool" of our own clinical nurses who support some of our affiliate schools of nursing. DHMC compensates these nurses at their current hourly rate and maintains their benefits. The schools of nursing provide salary support at their usual faculty rate and this money helps fund the "faculty pool." The staff nurse instructor is replaced on the floor by a per-diem nurse and the nurse's salary is charged to the faculty pool.

The faculty pool allows our staff nurses to try a new role without losing their positions at DHMC. It provides a nice career opportunity for our seasoned nursing staff who have always been interested in a faculty role. For the schools of nursing, it gives students exposure to highly qualified nurses during classroom instruction as well as clinical supervision on the nurse instructor's unit.
