Engage resistant staff with a script

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 11, 2005

When ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) "conductors"-staff in a role similar to that of MRP ambassadors or champions-encountered some change-resistant staff during their site-visit preparation efforts, their coordinators enlisted the help of an internal human resources consultant, says Lynn Wagner, RN, MS, CNAA,BC, MRP co-coordinator at Edward Hospital and Health Services in Naperville, IL. The consultant worked with the conductors for a couple of hours to create scripted responses to scenarios they might encounter with disengaged staff. As a result, the conductors are well-prepared to respond to staff and encourage their support of the MRP initiative. This activity worked well at Edward, says Wagner. "When it came time for the site visit, everybody was pumped."
