Q: You are the compliance director for a health system. You receive a report from the compliance trainer that physicians did not attend a mandatory compliance training session. This was a special session for physicians and was planned several months in advance. What do you do?

A: First, you must make sure that you have documentation supporting your position that compliance training is mandatory for all members of the organization. There are some things that compliance managers must take a hard stance on and training is one of them. You need to communicate, perhaps through a memo, that the physicians' absence will not be tolerated. You also should provide those physicians with copies of the organization's discipline policy for refusing training, and then work to schedule training that is most convenient for them.
