Promote staff feedback
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 4, 2005
In the ANCC's 2005 Magnet Recognition Program® Application Manual, one expectation under Force of Magnetism #3, management style, requires organizations to build an environment in which staff feedback is encouraged and valued. For instance, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington was adopting a consumer-driven health plan over the summer, and worked hard to include staff input every step of the way, says Katherine Riley, MSN, RN, CNA,BC, assistant vice president, operations. Staff participated in focus groups and the CEO conducted organizationwide employee meetings to explain the changes and elicit comments. Not all employees supported the new insurance plan, so based on staff feedback, hospital leadership revised the original insurance program. Riley says that even in designated hospitals you sometimes have to make unpopular decisions-but you can still take time to address staff concerns.
