Hospital lends a hand to a patient affected by Katrina
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 4, 2005
Atlanta-based Saint Joseph's Hospital-a ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® hospital since 1995-accepted a cardiac patient for surgery after he was stranded at Louisiana State University Hospital in New Orleans for more than a week following Hurricane Katrina. After his stent-implantation surgery, a nurse tracked down the patient's sister, who hadn't known his whereabouts for almost two weeks, to inform her of the patient's progress and that he could soon return home to Louisiana. The successful procedure was possible because Saint Joseph's recently partnered with the Larry King Cardiac Foundation (LKCF) to provide free cardiac care for those who can least afford it. Founded in 1988, the LKCF and its partner hospitals, physicians, and corporations, offer cardiac treatment to patients as part of their "Save a Heart a Day" initiative. The foundation provides funding for these treatments with support from grants and donations made by institutions, including pharmaceutical and medical-device companies. Saint Joseph's is a 382-bed, acute-care hospital recognized as one of the top specialty-referral hospitals in the Southeast.
