In 2003, nearly 2,000 qualified applicants were denied admission to associate degree and baccalaureate nursing programs in Maryland, primarily due to lack of faculty.

To address this issue, the University of Maryland School of Nursing has partnered with Shady Grove Adventist Hospital (SGAH) in a new initiative, Teach for the Health of It. With the help of a grant from the state's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation the initiative seeks to move a significant number of registered nurses (RNs) into faculty positions in a short period of time. The grant gives the program $800,000 over two years to train 40 or more qualified RNs to move into faculty teaching positions, as well as to aid nursing students to complete their degrees.
